PIRIOU set to build

two 80-metre Tuna purse seiner ships for SAPMER Holding

02 December 2013

PIRIOU has won a firm order for two units, plus an option for a third, of a new generation of freezer tuna purse seiner ships for SAPMER holding. With a design intended to sign SAPMER Holding's identity, these two 80m tuna ships will be delivered at the end of 2014 and the start of 2015 respectively and will be operated in the Indian Ocean.

Designed by PIRIOU's design office, these new tuna ships, that are simpler and more economical than the previous generation, will be built to meet the requirements of multi- purpose operation in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific for which they will provide an excellent showcase for PIRIOU in this Zone.

Pascal PIRIOU stated "We are really happy to have forged this strategic partnership with SAPMER, which will enable us to move forward together towards the Pacific. This order is an ideal opportunity to showcase our ships which opens up the market in the Pacific Tuna fishing Zone, since our prices are highly competitive compared with our Asian competitors due to the fact that the ships are simpler and are built in series in Vietnam."

The dry docking of the first block of the first unit is an opportunity for SEAS, PIRIOU's Vietnamese subsidiary, to inaugurate its new 240-tonne capacity overhead crane and to bolster its cooperation with the Vietnamese company Hai Minh, who operates the industrial site X51 where SEAS has been based since 2009.

Jean Marie Nicot-Bérenger, Director of PIRIOU Standard Ship Division and General Manager of SEAS', declared "thanks to the commissioning of this new overhead crane we will be able to cut the time spent for block assembly in the dry dock in half, and therefore double the site's production capacity. This investment financed by PIRIOU on HAI MIN shipyard's land is the fruit of our partnership and of our long term commitment to the site".

Yannick Lauri, Chief Executive Officer of the group SAPMER Holding added "We want the innovative and cutting edge design of these new ships to prepare for the future, by introducing a new, more economical type of propulsion taking account the energy market where resources are increasingly scarce and therefore more costly. The innovative electrical propulsion system has been simplified and will allow these ships to be operated throughout the world and meet ever stricter environmental protection criteria. "

Special features

The new shape of the bow optimises ship stability and crew comfort and also increases stowage capacity in the hold compared with a bulb bow tuna boat.

This tuna boat is a complex ship, equipped with an innovative system designed to freeze and conserve tuna at - 40°C (-17°C on traditional tuna boats). This process enables a significant improvement in fish quality and consequently an increase in its value (Sashimi quality).

The propulsion is diesel and electric rather than conventional, the shaftline and propeller are driven by two electric motors. This system provides flexible energy management, simplified maintenance and fuel economies.
