Aug 31 (Reuters) - Spanish online travel booking company eDreams ODIGEO said on Thursday it posted a profit for the first time since the pandemic hit the travel industry in 2020, in its fiscal first quarter.

The Barcelona-based firm reported a net profit of 4.1 million euros ($4.48 million) over the April-June period compared to a loss of 13.9 million euros one year ago. The company's fiscal year ends on March 31.

The company, which increasingly depends on its subscription model, said it managed to attract 4.7 million subscribers in the period, 47% more than a year earlier.

While subscriptions are common in other industries, such as music, television and telecoms, eDreams is a pioneer in developing it for the travel industry. The company charges an annual flat fee of about 55 euros for access to lower fares when booking on its websites.

Leisure travel has boomed since pandemic restrictions ended globally last year, with travellers pushing forward with their holiday plans despite soaring living costs.

The company said it is on track to meet its target of 7.25 million subscribers and 180 million euros in cash earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) in 2025.
