In what is being deemed a significant breakthrough in Pakistan, Mari Petroleum Company Ltd (MPCL) revealed on February 16 the discovery of a major gas deposit in the Kohlu District of Balochistan.

The Balochistan region, split into three areas, is governed by three nations: Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. In terms of resource development it is seen as a largely untapped area.

"The discovery is of significant importance for future exploration as it has revealed valuable information about the existing petroleum system of the area," stated MPCL, the primary operator of the block with a 95% interest in the site. The remaining 5% is held by the Oil and Gas Development Company Ltd (OGDCL).

Mari Petroleum, the commercial entity of the army-led Fauji Foundation benefits from a shareholding from the federal government. The firm has expressed its intention to accelerate exploration activities in the area to identify additional drilling prospects.
