Renewable diesel is gaining popularity in Sweden. Nesteʼs NEXBTL renewable diesel is appreciated for its eco-efficiency, ease of use and great value for money.

Several Swedish companies are now interested in NEXBTL. It is an HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) fuel and a 100-percent renewable diesel that is already sold by e.g. Energifabriken.
Energifabriken is a Swedish family-owned company that engages in the sale and distribution of renewable fuels only. The company started their operations in 2006 and have since operated with biofuels.
'When we learnt about HVO and made the decision to go with it, we chose to enter into a partnership with Neste,' Charlotte Elander, Marketing Manager at Energifabriken, says.

'We have chosen NEXBTL because we think it is a tested fuel that is very environmentally friendly. Plus there is a very good support organization at Neste which is also important when choosing a fuel.'
Co-operation with Neste started in 2014. The company had been looking for quite some time for ways of complementing their product portfolio with a renewable fuel that would meet customer needs - an easy fuel that is environmentally friendly and also has value for money.

Excellent feedback from customers

The NEXBTL sales argument in Sweden is primarily that it is a 100-percent renewable fuel that it has very low emissions. The feedback from customers has been excellent.

Energifabrikenʼs renewable diesel customers are primarily light and heavy goods haulage companies, bus companies, cleaning companies, taxi companies and also some other enterprises. The company also has customers who use renewable diesel for heating purposes.
'We help our customers a great deal, not just selling them fuel, but also in how they should communicate with their customers. We see this as a very important part of our business,' Charlotte Elander says.

Easy to use

Linköping-based Stångåbuss is one of Energifabrikenʼs customers. Stångåbuss uses NEXBTL in all of its fleet of 100 vehicles. The company saves 5,400 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year when using renewable diesel. They also opened Swedenʼs first gas station for 100-percent renewable diesel.
'It is important for us that NEXBTL is very easy to use and that we do not need to convert the vehicles at all. It is also important that NEXBTL has excellent cold weather characteristics,' Anett Engelhoffer of Stångåbuss explains.

'We plan to be fossil free in 2015. Everybody should be able to choose fossil-free transport, and today we can offer it. Many of our old and new customers appreciate the initiative,' she continues.
'When we expand our fleet, we will choose to drive new vehicles on HVO. We are marketing our HVO-station to get more people and companies to run fossil-free.'

NEXBTL attracts new customers

Energifabriken, Stångåbuss and Neste are also supporting Swedenʼs goal of replacing fossil fuels with renewable fuels.
'It is actually possible today to switch to renewable fuels. NEXBTL is a very important fuel in being able to do this,' Charlotte analyses.
'We are planning to expand sale of NEXBTL as there is a great deal of interest in this product in Sweden today and we get new customers every day.'
Fredrik Törnqvist, Marketing Manager Scandinavia at Neste, agrees with Charlotte.

'I see a great potential in NEXBTL both as a low blend fuel where oil companies blend NEXBTL with MK1 diesel and the emerging market for high blend (pure) NEXBTL. With the present legislation in Sweden renewable fuels are promoted. This opens up for a conversion from fossil diesel to NEXBTL,' he says.
In Sweden, the bus segment has been the first mover. Haulers and distributors are now following.

'Pure NEXBTL is not approved as a MK1 diesel because the density is below the standard (0.8). A separate approval to certify NEXBTL as a fuel is needed from the original equipment manufacturers (OEM:s). Scania and Volvo have already certified all Euro V and Euro VI engines for NEXBTL. There is a lot of attention now for renewable diesel in the market and most of the rest of the OEM:s are working on approvals to certify NEXBTL for heavy duty traffic. We have only good experiences using NEXBTL and are convinced that all diesel engines will work perfectly well with NEXBTL. But we do respect the engine manufacturersʼ procedures and approval processes for the guarantees to be valid for the customer,' Fredrik explains.

'Compared with fossil diesel, maintenance, service intervals and fuel consumption remain the same or better and CO2 emissions are reduced with 80-90 percent,' Fredrik says.
